Why SLS Free?

Millions of people have switched over to SLS free products – why? Because they have discovered the health benefits of using SLS free products, but how about the manufacturers? Are they reputable? Do they deliver what they claim? Below are some of the more established organic and SLS Free manufacturers.

Burt’s Bees

burts-bees

Burt’s Bees dates back to 1984 where Roxanne and Burt Shavitz met. Roxanne was hitch hiking and Burt came along and gave her a lift. Burt ran a roadside honeybee stand, Roxanne was intrigued, and the story began. Their first venture together was making candles from the unused wax; they made $200.00 at a craft show – the rest is history.

The company has a history and culture that matches the natural essence of each product. They encourage employees to give back to nature which nature has given to us. The natural ingredients used across product lines includes Acai Berry, Beeswax (of course), Lavender, Mango, Pomegranate, and Willow Bark – just to name a few.

The following are just some of the products offered at Burt’s:

  • Pomegranate Hair Shampoo
  • Super Shinny Mango Shampoo
  • Lip Balm
  • Natural Acne Solutions
  • Washes and Soaps
  • Baby Washes and Soaps

Burt’s Bees products are carefully crafted, using nature’s pure ingredients – you can be confident that every product is fully tested and Burt’s reputation stands behind it.

Tom’s of Maine

toms-of-maineIn 1970, Tom and Kate Chappell set out to start their own company creating natural care products. With a $5,000 loan from friends the Chappell’s started the Tom’s of Maine company. In 2006, the company became part of the Colgate-Palmolive company. You would think this partnership would have diluted the companies original philosophy, but not only have they maintained their origins, but the merger has allowed the founders new opportunities to to expand their standards of ecological responsibilities and values instilled in their products.

It’s worth mentioning what’s not in Tom’s products. What’s not in these products is artificial color, fragrances, and preservatives (EDTA, Formaldehyde, etc.). To do full disclosure we must mention that Tom’s offers toothpastes that have SLS in them and others that are SLS-Free.

Here are some of the products offers at Tom’s:

  • Antiperspirants
  • Deodorants
  • Soaps
  • Oral Care (dental floss, mouthwash, toothbrushes, toothpaste)

Within each category there’s a generous selection of products to choose from, especially when it comes to toothpaste.

The Tom’s company is community minded. They have maintained high standards of certification, and to this day hold firm to the goal of providing natural products to a health conscious consumer.

Desert Essence

desert-essenceDesert Essence is a company based in New York, which was started in 1978. There’s not a lot of historical data on this company, but they do have a nice variety of natural and organic personal care products.

Their product line includes:

  • Skin Care
  • Bath and Beauty
  • Hair Care
  • Dental Care
  • Organics

You won’t find SLS, Parabens, Silicone, or other ingredients not conducive with natural care products.

Awards have been handed out to several of the Desert Essence products from publications such as Natural Health, Better Nutrition, and Delicious Living.

There are quite a few other companies that make the claim of having “natural ingredients.” To a degree this is true, but after reading the labels we had found SLS buried in the verbiage. The point is, you must do a little digging yourself if SLS Free products are what you’re looking for.
